These instructions contain details on facilitating the opening share-outs and the Tug-of-War activity. We also provide general advice on leading an effective discussion so that all participants feel heard and valued.

Discussion Scripts and Slides

Below are links to the scripts and accompanying slides for each issue we’ve presented.The script and slides cover background information, relevant evidence, and a specific policy proposal that can be answered with a “Yes” or “No”. You may modify them for your use, but please give credit to the Dining with Democracy team during your event.

Getting Ideas for Other  Topics

Here are other ideas we have considered:

  • Voting and Elections
    • Should voting be mandatory?
    • Should people convicted of a felony be allowed to vote while on probation? While in prison?

    • To what extent should parents have control over the school curriculum/library books?
    • Should attendance affect course grades?
    • Should North Carolina continue to prevent students with failing grades from obtaining a driver’s license?
